The broadcasting rights for the highly
anticipated Pakistan Super League (PSL) have been auctioned at an unprecedented
Rs6.3 billion, reflecting a significant Rs2 billion increase from the previous
agreement.
In a competitive bidding process, a
private TV channel outperformed three other contenders, solidifying its
position as the exclusive broadcaster for this prestigious cricketing event.
Commencing with a reserve price of
Rs7.358 billion, the financial bids initially saw the previous rights holder
channel proposing Rs5.30 billion. Despite a range of bids from Rs4 billion to
Rs5.17 billion from a state-owned TV channel and two other competitors, none
met the reserve price, prompting an intense second round of bidding.
The channel with the highest initial bid
strategically increased its offer by an additional Rs1 billion during the
second round, ultimately securing the broadcasting rights for the next two
years at an impressive Rs6.30 billion. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)
approved this deal, with 95% of the proceeds allocated to the PSL franchises,
translating to over Rs3 billion annually for the franchises. Additionally,
digital rights were separately acquired for Rs1.85 billion, enhancing the
overall significance of the agreement.
Noteworthy is the PCB's exclusive
invitation to companies with their own sports channels or acquired rights from
another channel, resulting in four channels vying for these lucrative rights.
The PCB retained the authority to reconsider or postpone the process if the
reserve price was not met. Fortunately, a consensus was reached with a
substantial bid in the second round, ensuring the smooth progression of the
broadcasting rights deal.
In a surprising twist, the entity that
secured the broadcasting rights in the previous contract, with a reserve price
of Rs3.7 billion, emerged victorious once again, this time with a significantly
higher bid of Rs6.3 billion for a two-year duration.
To ensure transparency, the PCB enlisted the services of the international company 'Colganbauer' to conduct a comprehensive valuation of the PSL media rights before the bidding, establishing a value of Rs6 billion.
