The Ministry of IT and Telecom has submitted the innovative installment payment policy for mobile phones to the Federal Cabinet for approval.
The move, which was scrutinized by the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) and reviewed by the Ministry of Justice, is set to revolutionize the way people acquire mobile phones.
The initiative aims to empower people, especially those with limited financial means, by providing them with the opportunity to own a mobile phone through an interest-free installment plan.
The proposed policy introduces measures to deal with defaulters who fail to meet their payment obligations. If this measure is approved, citizens who have difficulty paying their bills could have their phones blocked.
In particular, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will play a central role in implementing this measure, marking a move away from traditional application dependence on mobile operators. PTA's Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) helps with the blocking process.
The policy highlights the government's commitment to inclusion, with a focus on supporting people on low incomes and ensuring they have access to essential technologies. This move is in line with our vision to create an inclusive digital environment that meets people's diverse needs.
In another interesting development, Acting Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecom Dr. Umar Saif revealed in a recent chat with journalists that telecom companies are considering offering installment plans for IPhones from Apple. This represents a further expansion of consumer choice, making premium devices accessible to a wider range of people.
