In Karachi, two additional passengers
were confirmed positive for Covid on Saturday, bringing the total number of
identified cases to four within a span of three days. The infected passengers,
aged 27 and 20, arrived from Jeddah and Sharjah, respectively. Their positive
Rapid Antigen Test results indicate Covid infection, and their samples have
been forwarded to a Dow University of Health Sciences’ laboratory for detailed
analysis, with results expected in at least five days. One passenger is a
resident of Kambar Shahdadkot in Sindh, while the other is from Muzaffargarh
district in Punjab; both have been advised to quarantine at home and have
already left for their residences. Earlier, two international travelers had
tested positive for Covid at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport and were
permitted to return to their hometowns in Dera Ghazi Khan (Punjab) and Sanghar
(Sindh) after being instructed to self-quarantine. The resumption of Covid
screening at airports is in response to concerns about the highly contagious
JN.1 variant, identified as a sub-variant of the Omicron lineage, which experts
note is more transmissible than other circulating variants. The proportion of
cases attributed to this variant is reportedly on the rise.
