Naveen-ul-Haq has been handed a 20-month
ban by the UAE's ILT20 for violating his player agreement with Sharjah
Warriors. The ban stems from his refusal to sign the retention notice for the
second season of the tournament scheduled for January-February next year,
effectively sidelining him from participating in the ILT20 in 2024 and 2025.
Despite this setback, Naveen has inked a deal with Durban's Super Giants,
affiliated with the IPL team Lucknow Super Giants.
The Sharjah Warriors, who initially
signed Naveen for the league's inaugural edition in 2023, had sent him a
retention notice earlier in the year, prompting them to seek intervention from
the ILT20. In an attempt to resolve the dispute, the league initiated a
mediation process through an independent third-party mediator, but the efforts
proved unsuccessful.
The ILT20 disciplinary committee,
consisting of CEO David White, head of security and anti-corruption Col Azam,
and Zayed Abbas from the Emirates Cricket Board, carefully considered the
perspectives of both the Warriors and Naveen, examining the available evidence
before delivering their verdict.
ILT20 Banned Naveen-ul-Haq
ILT20 CEO David White expressed regret
over the situation, emphasizing the importance of contractual compliance for
all parties involved. He stated that Naveen-ul-Haq's failure to honor his
commitments with the Sharjah Warriors left the league with no alternative but
to impose the 20-month ban. White underscored the transparent nature of the
disciplinary proceedings, highlighting that both parties had ample opportunities
to prepare and present their submissions.
Naveen, a standout performer for the
Warriors in the 2023 season, where he emerged as their joint-highest
wicket-taker with 11 wickets alongside Junaid Siddique, now faces a significant
setback in his cricketing career due to the imposed ban. Despite this setback,
he has found an avenue to continue playing with Durban's Super Giants in the
South African SA20 league, coinciding with the ILT20 schedule.
