Six years after his disappearance at the
age of 11 during a holiday in Spain with his mother and grandfather, British
boy Alex Batty is expected to return home this weekend. The discovery was made
by a driver in southern France, near Toulouse. Reports indicate that Batty, now
17, had been living in France for the past two years in a spiritual community,
as revealed by Fabien Accidini, the French motorist who found him by the
roadside. Batty claimed to have been kidnapped by his mother in Morocco five
years ago, subsequently spending three years in Spain and the past two in
France. Accidini noted that Batty described his mother as "a bit
crazy."
French authorities have announced that
Alex Batty, the British boy found in southern France, is expected to reunite
with his family, particularly his maternal grandmother, as early as Saturday.
Toulouse assistant public prosecutor Antoine Leroy shared in a televised
briefing that Batty had chosen to leave the spiritual community he resided in
due to concerns that his mother might take him to Finland, a destination she is
likely located in currently. Leroy described the community as one that moved
from house to house with solar panels, emphasizing carpooling and residing in
places with substantial housing for multiple families. Batty reportedly
mentioned no instances of physical violence from anyone, including his mother,
and Leroy assured that the teenager is in good health. Additionally, he
mentioned that Batty's grandfather had passed away approximately six months ago
under circumstances that are still unknown.
The Child is So
Happy
Susan Caruana, Alex Batty's legal
guardian and grandmother, expressed her joy and relief upon hearing from him,
stating that he is in good health and currently with French authorities. Batty
reportedly sent a message to his grandmother from a Frenchman's Facebook
account, expressing his desire to come home and assuring her of his love. The
Greater Manchester Police in the UK acknowledged the possible sighting of Alex
Batty in France and are coordinating with French authorities to confirm the
authenticity of the report. They emphasized the need for further inquiries and
the implementation of safeguarding measures in this complex and longstanding
investigation.
