A surfing boy killed by Shark in Southern Australia at Yorke Peninsula beach.
teenager has been killed in a shark attack at a popular
tourist and holiday resort in South Australia, police said.
Officials said the body was recovered from the water after
the attack in Ennis National Park near Ethel Beach in Yorke County.
A local resident said Thursday that the attack on the resort
was the first fatal attack he knew of.
It is the latest in a series of recent attacks in South
Australian waters.
In a statement, South Australian police said officers were
first alerted to the attack at 1.30pm local time (0230 GMT) on Wednesday.
"Unfortunately, the body of a young man was recovered
from the water," the police said in a statement.
The group, which did not release information about the boy's
age, said authorities were preparing a report for a medical examination.
Ethel Beach is a sandy beach of 400 meters long, popular
with tourists and tourists with a wave of 1.5 meters high.
Marty Goody, a local resident who has surfed the area for
decades, told ABC News that he believed the victim was "about 30 to 40
yards from shore."
He said there have always been sharks in the area, "but
now it seems there are more."
This is the latest shark attack in South Australian waters
in recent months.
In May, a preacher died on the Eyre Peninsula and in
February a girl was killed by a shark in a river in Perth, the capital of
Western Australia.
Australia has more shark attacks than any other country
except the United States.
Scientists warn that an increase in shark sightings does not
necessarily mean an increase in numbers.
